The date? Friday, September 10th. The time? 8 p.m. The place? From SoHo to the Meatpacking District, Herald Square to the Upper East Side, and pretty much everywhere else in Manhattan too.
As I walked down Broadway, approaching Spring, I breathed in the night air and the breath traveled in through my nostrils all the way to my fingertips and toes. I was alive. I asked myself, Had I ever been alive before that moment? The energy around me was overwhelming and overtook all of my senses. Somehow, my legs kept moving, and I was walking down Broadway. Stores from Anthropologie to Sephora, Prada to the Billionaire Boys’ Club had DJs, bands, dancing, celebrity-hosted parties, free drinks, and gift bags and gift cards too. But it was the New Yorkers that provided the essential ingredient–the energy. The crowd was a mix of hipster, funky, nerd-glasses wearing, model types, and fauxhawk having youngsters.
It’s fashion week in NYC. Fashion shows are invite only, and “Fashion’s Night Out” gives everyone a chance to partake in the fancy. Just walking down the streets of SoHo filled me with an indescribable amount of positive energy. It was as if all of the stars aligned, and shone down on Manhattan.
Most of the official “everyone in the city is invited” events ended at 10 p.m., but the crowds remained. As I was walking down Mercer around 11 pm, I saw a crowd of people standing around a door. Apparently, Marc Jacobs was having a “pop up” fashion show–and many celebs, including Kanye, were in attendance. And that’s when things got a little crazy and chaotic, but in NYC, I have learned to expect the unexpected, and I love it!
I really do like this city a little more each day (well, a LOT more after this night).
